Our expertise

Compulsory health insurance (LAMal) is basic health insurance required for everyone living or working in Switzerland. Benefits are the same across all health insurers.

In Switzerland, LAMal covers basic healthcare costs but has some gaps. Supplementary insurance lets you extend cover to suit your needs.

With the family-doctor model, you receive a premium discount while keeping the same benefits as basic insurance. Your doctor coordinates your care.

Private or semi-private hospital supplementary insurance extends compulsory health-insurance reimbursements during hospital stays.

Prenatal insurance is taken out before a child's birth. It may include LAMal basic insurance and supplementary insurance for a newborn without a medical questionnaire.

Ongoing travel insurance can cover medical costs, medical repatriation, emergency hospital stays, and search and rescue costs in Switzerland and abroad.

Swiss health insurance FAQ

Deadlines, deductibles, models and switching insurers: essential answers to help you compare basic insurance and make an informed decision.

20 clear answers
Why compare Swiss health insurance premiums every year?

Insurers set new premiums each year, and prices can change differently by insurer, canton and premium region. An annual comparison shows whether your basic insurance still suits your budget.

Are basic health insurance benefits the same with every insurer?

Yes. Mandatory basic-insurance benefits are defined by the Swiss Health Insurance Act and are the same with every insurer. Premiums, service and available insurance models can still differ.

Can an insurer reject me because of my age or health?

Not for basic insurance. Any insurer operating in your region must accept you without exclusions, a waiting period or a health questionnaire, regardless of your age or health.

What is the deadline for switching insurer on 1 January?

Your cancellation must reach your current insurer by the last working day of November. The FOPH recommends sending it around mid-November by registered mail or A Mail Plus because the date of receipt matters.

Can I switch health insurer during the year?

A switch on 1 July is possible only in certain cases, notably with the standard model, free choice of doctor and the ordinary deductible. The insurer must receive the cancellation by 31 March.

How do I switch basic health insurance?

Compare premiums, apply to the new insurer, then cancel basic insurance with your current insurer within the applicable deadline. Keep proof of dispatch and check the confirmations you receive.

When does my old insurance actually end?

It ends when the new insurer confirms to the former insurer that you are covered without interruption. Until that confirmation is sent, you remain insured by your current insurer.

Can I keep supplementary insurance when I switch basic insurance?

Yes. Basic and supplementary insurance are separate contracts and may remain with different insurers. Never cancel supplementary cover before receiving written acceptance from the new insurer.

What is the difference between basic and supplementary insurance?

Basic insurance covers benefits required by law and must accept everyone. Supplementary insurance covers additional benefits, and the insurer may request health information or reject an application.

What determines my Swiss health insurance premium?

The premium depends on factors including your canton and premium region, age, deductible, insurance model and accident cover. Your income does not directly change the premium charged by the insurer.

What is a health insurance deductible?

The deductible is the annual amount you pay before basic insurance contributes to covered costs. It is calculated per calendar year and is followed by the statutory co-payment.

Which deductibles can I choose in Switzerland?

The ordinary deductible is CHF 300 for adults and CHF 0 for children. Optional deductibles are available up to CHF 2,500 for adults and CHF 600 for children, depending on the insurer’s offer.

Is a high deductible always cheaper overall?

No. A high deductible usually lowers the premium but increases what you must be able to pay when you need care. The right choice depends on expected healthcare costs and your financial reserve.

When can I change my deductible?

You can change it for the start of a new calendar year. A request to lower it must reach the insurer before the end of November; to raise it, notify the insurer early enough before year-end.

How do standard, HMO, family-doctor and telemedicine models differ?

The standard model provides free choice of doctor. HMO, family-doctor and telemedicine models specify a first point of contact in return for an often lower premium; exact rules vary by insurer.

Can I remove accident cover from basic insurance?

Generally yes if you work at least eight hours a week for the same employer, because its insurance also covers non-occupational accidents. Ask your health insurer to remove the cover and provide the required confirmation.

Must everyone in a family use the same health insurer?

No. Each household member can choose their own basic insurer, deductible and insurance model. Comparing the household together still helps you see the total cost and decide whether grouping policies is convenient.

Can moving home change my health insurance premium?

Yes. Premiums depend on the canton and sometimes on the premium region within it. Tell your insurer your new address promptly so the correct rate is applied to your new place of residence.

Who can receive a Swiss premium reduction?

Cantons grant premium reductions to individuals and families who meet their income and personal-situation criteria. Eligibility, the amount and the application process vary by canton.

Where do Prime Info’s premium figures come from?

The Prime Info comparison tool uses official 2026 premiums published by the Federal Office of Public Health. Results depend on the details entered and remain an indicative comparison to check before applying.
